Recognize 8th Grade Students, Recognize Members of our Faculty, Homeroom Teachers for Next Year and Graduation

St. Nicholas Academy

May 27, 2009

Dear St. Nicholas Academy Community,

As the end our second school year come to a close I take this opportunity to again say THANKS for ALL who make St. Nicholas Academy possible. May the summer give us time to renew and refresh ourselves in preparation for the start of our 3rd year in August.

The end of the school year is also a time to recognize those who will not be with us next year. We remember in a special way our 8th grade students who will soon graduate and begin their lives away from St. Nicholas. Our prayers are for many good things for these young men and women.

We also recognize those members of our faculty who will be moving on after the end of this school year. Mrs. Lynda Mihalchik, our Title I and Auxiliary Reading teacher will be retiring this year. Along with providing a wonderful Reading program Mrs. Mihalchik has also been responsible for the many flowers around our school building. Mrs. Mihalchik has assured me that she will continue to look after our flower gardens in retirement. Mrs. Pat Zurlinden, our Speech Pathologist will be serving full time next year at Ursuline Academy in Blue Ash. We thank her for her service to St. Nicholas and wish her the very best. As you know, our full time physical education/art position has been discontinued due to budgetary restraints. We thank Mrs. Ferdon for her service to St. Nicholas Academy and wish her the very best in the future. Next year our School Nurse will be provided by the Norwood Board of Health. We thank our nurse for the past 2 years, Mrs. Lynn Durbin and wish her the very best also.

For next year our homeroom teachers will remain pretty much the same as this year. Homeroom teachers will teach art to their students each week. Mr. Hertlein will teach PE for grades 7 and 8. Miss. Braun will teach PE for grades 6 and 4. Mrs. Burke will teach PE for grades 5 and 3. Mrs. Perkins will teach PE for grades K, 1 and 2. ALL students in grades K-8 will continue to have 1 period of art and 2 periods of PE each week. We are still working on providing a period of computer for ALL of our students as well. Mrs. Wright and Mr. Hertlein will be providing this course for our students and I will work out the schedule over the summer.

The Graduation Liturgy for our 8th grade students will be held on Monday June 1st at 7:00 P.M. Our last day of classes will be on Tuesday June 2nd. We will have Mass on that day starting at 8:30 A.M. followed by Awards. Classes will be dismissed on June 2nd at 11:00 A.M. and there will be no After School Care that day.

The school office will be open during the summer from 7:00 A.M – 12:30 P.M. Have a great summer.

Sincerely,

Mr. Gerry Myers, Principal

Picnic Day, Master Schedule for Next Year and Jump Rope for Heart Campaign

St. Nicholas Academy

May 13, 2009

Dear St. Nicholas Academy Community,

Time is moving quickly and we are trying to insure that we have covered all of the material. Our students and teachers are working very hard.

Last week we reported that Our Lady of the Sacred Heart would enter into a discussion with St. Nicholas Academy about possibly joining our partnership. This week I received a letter from St. Clement School and they too will be joining in this discussion. I ask for your prayers for these meetings and have a great deal of hope for our future. The goal, as always, is to provide a Quality Catholic Education at an affordable price to the families in our partnership.

We will hold a Picnic Day for our students on Friday May 29th. Lunch will be provided, hot dogs, drink, etc. and we will have an extended recess that day.

I continue to work on the master schedule for next year and am very impressed with the willingness of our faculty and staff to do what it takes to get the job done. The budget will be extremely tight but I believe that St. Nicholas will again offer a quality program for our students and families next year. We hope to add a computer class next year for all of our students along with providing an outstanding physical education and fine arts program. This, along with a strong academic program will continue to be our goal and focus for the coming year.

Thank you to our families for the support of the Jump Rope for Heart campaign and the food collection for the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Both were a great success.

Sincerely,

Mr. Gerry Myers, Principal

Bad Weather, Special Person Day, Registration & Conferences

St. Nicholas Academy

February 4, 2009

Dear St. Nicholas Academy Community,

It looks like we have made it through the bad weather. Hopefully spring is just around the corner. Thank you for your patience last week and for being flexible as our plans continued to change. The call system seems to be of help. Please let the office know if you are not receiving calls and Mrs. Dunham will make sure that your numbers are included.

Today students saw the play, “Coretta Scott King” presented by Art Reach. We will have our Special Person Day on Friday February 6, starting with Mass at 8:30 in St. John the Evangelist Church and then continuing with a tour of the building and refreshments in school until around 10:00 A.M. Students will meet their Special Person in Church. Grade 1-2 will be leading us in prayer. The Book Fair continues this week and will conclude on Friday February 6. The teachers will also have their PTO luncheon this Friday. As of this writing I am still trying to reschedule the Spaghetti Dinner and the magic show for the students. We will hold the Student Appreciation Day near the end of the quarter and I will send details on the date when it is on the calendar.

The Board of Limited Jurisdiction will have an OPEN FORUM meeting the first Saturday of every other month in our school library, 3rd floor, from 10:00 A.M. until noon. The meeting will consist of SNA Board members and anyone who has any positive ideas or suggestions that will help SNA be even better than it already is. The first meeting will be held this Saturday February 7 at 10:00 A.M.. The next meeting will be held on Saturday April 4. Please bring your ideas to your Board.

Thank you for the many registration forms received for next year. We will be tallying numbers during the next few weeks and then making decisions on staffing for next year. It has really helped our planning to have so many early returns. If you have not let us know of your intent for next year, or have lost the registration forms please let the office know and we will send you a new set. The forms are also available on the web site at stnacademy.org

Please remember that conferences will be held on Thursday February 12th and we will dismiss at 2:00 P.M. on that day. There will be no classes on Friday February 13th or Monday February 15th.

Sincerely,

Mr. Gerry Myers, Principal

A Piece of Christmas, Report Cards, Tuition for 2009-2010 & Catholic Schools Week

St. Nicholas Academy

January 7, 2009

Dear St. Nicholas Academy Community,

Welcome Back! I hope that the Christmas Recess was good for ALL of our families. Thank you for all of the many cards, wishes and remembrances shared during the Christmas season. One of the highlights of the holiday was our presentation of, “A Piece of Christmas.” I was so very proud of the wonderful job done by our students. A very special Thanks to Mrs. Graler and Mrs. Lewis on a great production. Also thanks to Fr. Tom and St. John the Evangelist Church for allowing us to use the Church for this production.

We will end the 2nd quarter and the 1st semester this Friday January 9. Report cards and Terra Nova results will be sent home on Friday January 16.

The SNA Board will make final decisions concerning tuition for the 2009-2010 school year and we will be sending home registration information in the very near future. As always we do everything possible to keep the tuition down while still being able to meet our financial obligations. Financial Aid forms are available in the school office and you can pick them up or we can send them home at your request. You may use 2007 tax returns to fill these out and I suggest that the form be submitted by the end of January.

A listing of the events of Catholic Schools Week is included in the packet today. Please plan on joining us when you can. This is a great way to show case our school and if you know of any one who is looking for a great Catholic School for their children please let them know of the many events scheduled for this week. We hope to create Care Packages for those who serve in the Armed Services as part of our observance. If you have a family member or know of anyone serving in the Armed Forces please let the office know. We will be sending home the list of items that we will be collecting soon.

We are seriously considering a change from the 4 quarter system to 3 Trimesters for next year. Several Catholic Schools in our cluster have made this change and ALL are very favorable about the results. We would be in school the same amount of time, 180 days, but each trimester would be composed of about 60 days versus 4 quarters with 42-48 days. We would continue to send Interim reports every 5 weeks but report cards would only be sent home 3 times a year versus the current 4. We would continue to use Option C so that parents could view student progress via the internet. I would welcome any input from our parents on this.

Thanks for a very productive 1st Semester. I ask for your prayers for the continued success of our school.

Sincerely,

Mr. Gerard K. Myers,
Principal

Advent Season, Turkey Bowl, Santa Shop, Christmas Show & Concessions at XU

St. Nicholas Academy

December 3, 2008

Dear St. Nicholas Academy Community,

Welcome to a New Church Year. In order to really enter into this Advent Season our school community will gather each Monday to light the candles of the Advent Wreath and pray together in our front hall at the start of the day. Students in grades 3-6 had the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation yesterday and grades 7-8 will have celebrate this Sacrament next Tuesday. We will celebrate the feast of St. Nicholas at our school Mass this Friday at 8:30 A.M. and return to Church on Monday December 8th for the feast of the Immaculate Conception. There will be no school Mass on Friday December 12. Please keep our school in your prayers during this Holy Time.

A special congratulations to our 7th-8th grade football team on winning the Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving Day. It was a wonderful game and we are all very proud of our students. Our student Senate planned a special Pep Rally today to honor Coach Luck and the team members who attend St. Nicholas. Coach Luck will make the rounds to Nativity, St. Clement and St. Cecelia, where some of the team members attend with the trophy. Way to go Knights.

I will be out of the office on December 9-10 to chair a validation team at St. Bernadette School in Cleveland. Every Catholic School in the State of Ohio goes through this process and it is always good to see what other Catholic Schools are doing in the State. I hope to finish up and get back here for the end of the day on December 10th.

The Santa Shop will be open for students to do some Christmas shopping this coming Friday December 5th. Breakfast with Santa will be held on Saturday December 6th here at St. Nicholas.

Students and teachers have been working very hard on our Christmas Show, “A Piece of Christmas,” which will be held on Tuesday December 16th in St. John the Evangelist Church at 7:00 P.M. Mr. O’Shea is busy hanging our Christmas lights and making our building ready for Christmas.

We are in need of workers for the Concessions at XU on Tuesday December 23rd. If you can help please contact Mrs. Tolbert, Mr. DiMario or the school office. THANKS for your help.

Blessings to All of our community for a wonderful Advent Season.

Sincerely,

Mr. Gerry Myers, Principal

Report Cards & Conferences, Congratulations To…, Hoodie Sweatshirts

St. Nicholas Academy

October 29, 2008

Dear St. Nicholas Academy Community,

We have begun our second quarter. Report cards will be sent home this coming Friday and conferences are scheduled for Thursday November 6th and 13th. We will dismiss on November 6th at 2:00 P.M. The 13th will be a regular dismissal day at 2:45 P.M.

We offer our congratulations to Mr. Jim O’Shea, our maintenance director, who will receive the prestigious
St. George Award from the National Committee on Scouting. The award recognizes outstanding contribution to the spiritual development of Catholic youth in the program of the Boy Scout of America. We also offer congratulations to Thomas Perry and Alex Seither who were recently selected to be part of the Cincinnati All Boys Choir.

Our 5th/6th grade football team remains undefeated as they progress in the CYO city tournament. They will play at Summit Country Day School this coming Sunday at 3:00 P.M. Although our 7th/8th grade team lost last weekend they played an outstanding game and represented our school in a very positive way. We are very proud of all our athletes.

Hoodie sweatshirts are now available and in stock at Campus Outfitters, our uniform store. The store is located near the Tri-County Mall and their phone number is 772-4250. This is the only Hoodie that may be worn as part of the uniform.

We now have a bin to collect aluminum cans and ask you to bring your cans in. Proceeds raised from this project will benefit our school and the Twin Parish of St. John the Evangelist. Thanks for your help.

Please join us this evening for the Geography Night and view the many projects our students have been involved in. The program begins at 7:00 P.M. and each class will have displays, interactive activities and projects to view.

Sincerely

Mr. Gerry Myers,
Principal

Social Studies Night, Concessions at Xavier University

St. Nicholas Academy

October 22, 2008

Dear St. Nicholas Academy Community,

I hope that you enjoyed the walk free day and In-service day this past week. Our faculty enjoyed the time at Roger Bacon and received a very good in-service on diversity in the classroom. We are very thankful to Roger Bacon for including us in this workshop and hope to implement some of the learning in our school.

A reminder that the 8th grade study class for the High School entrance test will begin on Monday October 27 after school. Please be aware of the various Open House opportunities at the Catholic High Schools in our area. This is a good way to get to know a school.

Our Social Studies Night is scheduled for Wednesday October 29th at 7:00 P.M. and this is an opportunity to see some of the projects our students are working on. The faculty and students have worked very hard to put this program together. Special Thanks to Mrs. Graler for organizing this event.

The end of the quarter will be this coming Friday October 24th. This year we will use the Option C program to print our report cards. Please say a prayer for Mrs. Dunham and myself as we learn how to use this program!
Report cards will be sent home on Friday October 31st.

We will work our first Concessions at Xavier University this coming Friday October 24th. We are still in need of a few folks to help with this. It entails being at XU at 5:00 and working the concession stand. If you are available and willing to work please call the school office. We are usually on our way home right after half time or a little after. Many of the board members and faculty/staff are helping with this first game. It is a way to raise desperately needed money for our school without selling anything. We hope to have a list of games soon for our parents to sign up for in the near future. Please consider helping with this needed project.

Sincerely,

Mr. Gerry Myers,
Principal
