Catholic Schools Week Details, 8th graders with honors, New website, Facebook voting

Dear St. Nicholas Academy Community,

Catholic Schools Week is upon us! In order to avoid any confusion I am going to list the various

events here with the corrected times etc. Some things had to change in order facilitate getting various

places set up. Sorry for the confusion. Here is the OFFICIAL LIST AND TIME OF EVENTS:

SUNDAY JANUARY 30 – Open House at SNA 12:00-2:00. A presentation for new families will be

held at 12:30 P.M. in the community Room. Student work will be on displays through out the

building.

MONDAY JANUARY 31 – Students will write THANK YOU NOTES to parishioners of Holy

Trinity, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and St. John which will be distributed at Mass the following

weekend.

TUESDAY February 1 – Out of Uniform Day/No Homework. 8th grade/Faculty Volley ball game at

12:30 in the gym.

WEDNESDAY February 2 – Teacher Appreciation Day. Teacher dress down day and special lunch

provided by the PTO. Parents will cover recess duty today.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 3 – ST. NICHOLAS DAY. Students/Faculty wear SNA Spirit Wear.

Bingo for grades k-4 in the cafeteria 1:00 – 2:00 (Big Buddies will assist little Buddies)

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 3 – Special Persons Day. Students will meet Special Persons in the Gym for

9:30 A.M. Mass followed by a tour of the school. Our guests will depart at 11:00 A.M.

Bingo for grades 5-8 in the cafeteria 1:00-2:00

Spaghetti Dinner in the gym 5:00-7:00 Sponsored by the PTO. There is NO charge however donations will be accepted to cover some of the costs.

Please don’t forget about the Quilt Raffle and the Silent Auction for the Pottery made by each class going on during Catholic Schools Week. There are prizes for the homeroom turning in the most chances on the quilt raffle. Pottery bids begin on Sunday at Open House and close at 6:30 P.M. on Friday at the Spaghetti Dinner. The quilt is on display in the gym and the pottery in the front all of the school. Proceeds of the quilt raffle will assist the marketing committee. Proceeds from the pottery auction will assist the Seeds of Service project.

Please check out the new web site at stnacademy.org or saintnicholasacademy.com. It really turned out nice and will serve our school well. THANKS for all of the work that has gone into this project.

Registration packets were sent home with students on Monday. Forms are also available on the web site. Please turn in your registration packets as soon as possible so that we can begin making plans for next year. Also, if you know of any family who might be interested in joining us next year please encourage them to contact the school office.

A list of our 8th grade students who have earned academic honors and scholarships at our area Catholic High Schools is also part of the communication today. WE are very proud of our students and their accomplishments. If we have missed anyone on this list PLEASE let the office know so that they too can be recognized.

Voting on Facebook for St. Nicholas Academy continues until February 3rd. We are ahead by about 200 votes which really is not very much so PLEASE VOTE EACH DAY AND ENCOURAGE family and friends to do the same. We anticipate those schools near us in the voting to put on a major

Dear St. Nicholas Academy Community,

It is Wednesday again. The weather is not sounding great for tomorrow and Friday so please be prepared should we have to delay or cancel school. So far we have used one of our calamity days. The State gave us 3 this year and I added 2 additional days to the calendar just in case.

WE ARE STILL IN DESPARATE NEED OF WORKERS for the XU game next Wednesday January 26th. Workers need to be at the Cintas Center no later than 5:15-5:30. This is our last game so PLEASE volunteer to help. You can volunteer by contacting Paul DiMario at paul@peerlessprinting.com 309-9019 or Courtney Booher at ckbooher@yahoo.com 257-5043.

I am awaiting the final vote of our board on tuition for next year and will be sending home the registration information, hopefully by the end of the week. We ask that you return as soon as possible so that we can start to make plans for next year. I also offer my thanks to our parents for the sacrifice they make to insure the success of our Catholic School and for your positive comments about the school to the larger community. I have had several calls this week from perspective families telling me that they have heard that St. Nicholas is a great school!

There are a couple of changes for the Catholic Schools Week Schedule which is attached to the communication this week. The faculty/8th grade volley ball game will be held on Student Appreciation Day, Tuesday February 1st. This is so the gym can be set up for the spaghetti dinner on Friday after the special person Mass. Please refer to the calendar that is attached.

The quilt on display in the gym will be raffled off during Catholic Schools Week. The class selling the most chances for this will receive a jean day and pizza party. ALSO, PLEASE KEEP VOTING ON FACEBOOK FOR ST. NICHOLAS. AS OF TODAY WE ARE STILL IN FIRST PLACE. The winner will be announced during Catholic Schools Week and 1st prize is a school wide dress down day and pizza party provided by the School Office, along with an article in the Catholic Telegraph. You can vote every day so please keep the votes going.

The voting on Facebook continues through Catholic Schools Week. I am told that SNA is currently in first place. A vote may be cast each day so please keep the votes for SNA coming. Votes can be placed at facebook.com/mycatholicschool.

We are still in need of workers for our last XU game on Wednesday January 26th. Workers are needed no later 5-5:15 on the 26th and can be 16years of age or older. Interim Reports will be sent home with students on Friday and are a reflection of progress since the report cards were sent home in November. If you have questions please contact your student’s teacher. We will have another round of conferences on Thursday February 17th.

A list of the events to happen during Catholic Schools Week is part of the packet today along with several other areas of interest. As usual it will be a very fun week.

Since the board meeting was rescheduled from last night there will be a short delay in sending home the registration packets and tuition information for the 2011 school year.

There is a general PTO meeting this evening at 7:00 P.M. in the cafeteria. If you attend your children may be out of uniform on Thursday.

COSI ON WHEELS
Thursday, February 10th, 2011

COSI ON WHEELS will be bringing its “Current Conditions” weather program to St. Nicholas Academy on Thursday, February 10th. This program will be presented to grades K-6th. We will need parent volunteers to make this program a success. COSI requires that we have at least 20 adult volunteers.

If you would like to volunteer during your child’s hands-on session, please note that the following grades will be participating in the morning sessions: K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The afternoon session will be for 4th, 5th, and 6th.

Scripture Alive!—Grades 6 & up
The first Scripture Alive meeting will be held on Sunday, January 16th with PIZZA! Scripture Alive is for youth in Grades 6-12. The meetings will be held 4:00-6:00pm on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month in the Parish Center lower level community room. Discussion groups will be formed by age group. We will explore the Word of God in a fun, interactive way to discover how we might grow in our faith. The primary facilitators are Mr. Michael Collins (Music Director/Youth Minister) and Bob and Sue Kettler (members of the Youth Leadership Team). Please RSVP for the first meeting so that we know how much pizza to order. Permission and medical forms are mandatory for all youth activities in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and can be obtained from the literature rack in the church vestibule or by contacting Mr. Collins at mcollins9@fuse.net or through the church office at 733-4950.

Cast Your Nets—January 30, 2010, 5:00-9:00pm:
On January 30th the OLSH Youth Group, Grades 8 –High School, will participate in Cast Your Nets. This event is a Cincinnati area gathering of high school Catholics from any parish or school. Last year we had about 35 kids!
This event will be held from 5:00-9:00pm at Good Shepherd and will include Sunday Mass celebrated by Archbishop Schnurr. There will be great music, a powerful speaker, an opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, free dinner, fellowship, and more.
Permission and medical forms are mandatory for all youth activities in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and can be obtained from the literature rack in the church vestibule or by contacting Mr. Collins at mcollins9@fuse.net or through the church office at 733-4950.

Dear St. Nicholas Academy Community,

Welcome Back and THANK YOU to all of our students and families for the wonderful gifts and wishes bestowed on me and our faculty and staff this Christmas. I am overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity!

We have an opportunity to show our school spirit by voting for our school on facebook.com/My Catholic School. I am told that we are in third place already so get on and vote for SNA. (If someone can show me how to use facebook I will vote too!) A separate flyer about this will be sent in an email to you today.

Our last Xavier game is on Wednesday January 26th. We need 20 workers for this game. THANKS to all who have worked the first 2 games and to those who will volunteer for this game. Workers need to be in the booth no later than 5-5:15 on the 26th. Catholic Schools Week is just around the corner. We will send home a list of ALL of the events very shortly but for now please mark your calendar for Sunday January 30th noon-1:30 for the OPEN HOUSE and also Friday February 4th for the Special Persons Mass to begin at 9:30 A.M. in the gym. (Students may invite a Special person, grandparents, aunts, uncles, godparents, and neighbors for Mass and a tour of the school after.)

The majority of our 8th graders will be at Moeller and Mt. Notre Dame this Friday for their Show Case Days. If your 8th grader would rather shadow at another school this would be a good day to do it.

There will be a general PTO meeting next Wednesday January 12th at 7:00 P.M. in the cafeteria.

Registration packets for the 2011-2012 school year will be sent home shortly. The board will meet next week and hopefully set the tuition for next year and then we can get started with registration. If you know of any family who would like to join our school family PLEASE Spread the Good News and ask them to call the school office.

Advanced Band Students concert rehearsal
January 2011 HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Our postponed Advanced Band Christmas Concert and combined schools rehearsal have both been rescheduled.

THURSDAY, Jan., 13th 4-5:30 pm in the cafeteria at St James of the Valley School

Rescheduled ADVANCED BAND CONCERT now FRIDAY, Jan., 14th at 7pm
in the cafeteria at St James of the Valley School

Everyone is invited to attend this FREE concert. Advanced band students should arrive between 6:30-6:45 pm and the concert starts at 7pm immediately followed by a brief social time with refreshments. Each advanced band student family please bring a dozen cookies or similar treat for sharing on the refreshment table. Concert dress is still mostly green and/or red clothing

Looking ahead, mark your calendars. The LaSalle High School Festival of Bands takes place on Sun., March 6th in their gymnasium at 3-4pm including a Grade School Combined Band, the McAuley HS Orchestra, and the LaSalle HS Lancer Concert Band. Any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade band students can participate-simply return the name slip on the concert information notice being distributed Jan, 18th-21st then attend the Sat., Mar. 5th 1-3 pm rehearsal and Sunday concert.

Our first monthly Advanced Band Special Rehearsals takes place on Thursday, January 13th from 4:00-5:30 in the Cafeteria at St. James of the Valley School. Watch for updates about Feb., Mar., and Apr. rehearsals at St Boniface/Northside, St Michael/Sharonville, St Nicholas Academy, and the May rehearsalat St. Vivian School the day before our Spring Concert.

Band students are welcome at any after-school band practices if you can provide transportation. My schedule includes beginners 2:45-3:30 and advanced 3:30-4:15 on Tuesdays at St. St James of the Valley —2:30-3:15 beginners and 3:15-4:00 advanced Wednesdays at St. Vivian—3:00-3:45 beginners and 3:45-4:30 Thursdays at St Michael, and 2:45-3:30 beginners and advanced 3:30-4:15 at St Boniface on Fridays.

Band students learn more than how to play an instrument by being in band—the bonuses are teamwork, discipline, higher academic test scores, and healthy-fun social skills. The Spring Band Concert for both beginner and advanced band students takes place at St. Vivian School on Winton Road on a date still TBA. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our upcoming rescheduled Advanced Band Concert and again in May at the Spring Band Concert!

DONUT SUNDAYS

The OLSH Knights of Columbus and the Men’s Club invite you to the monthly “Donut Sunday” on the second Sunday of each month during the school year.

Orange Juice, milk, coffee and donuts are served after the 8:30 and 10:30 Masses, and also in between.

Come join us and enjoy the company of your fellow parishioners’ and parents in the school cafeteria.

Dear St. Nicholas Academy Community,

It was wonderful to see so many of our families at the SNA presentation of Christmas Snapshots. I offer my humble thanks to Mrs. Carol Graler and Mrs. Karen Wijesekera for All of their work on this wonderful Christmas gift to our school community.

I have some updates for when it is necessary to delay the start of school due to weather. First, the call has to made no later than 6:00 A.M as we have students catching the bus as early as 6:45 A.M and teachers leaving for school even earlier. I will start the All Call as soon as a decision is made. I will also post delay/closing information on the local TV and radio stations. It is never an easy decision to make but the safety of our students and staff is the first consideration.

IMPORTANT BUS INFORMATION: If the Princeton and Sycamore School district are on a delay they will pick up students according to the delay time, for instance: If your normal pick up time is 7:15 A.M. and they are on a 2 hour delay the pick up time would be 9:15 A.M. If buses run in the morning then they will run in the afternoon. The Cincinnati Public buses that also serve Deer Park and Norwood will attempt to do the same thing for us. IF PRINCETON, SYCAMORE OR CINCINNATI CANCEL SCHOOL FOR THE DAY THERE IS NO BUS SERVICE IN THE MORNING OR THE AFTERNOON. When I send the early ALL call out I will attempt to have information on Bus Service from the three districts but please remember that this sometimes changes so you will have to watch and listen for this on the local TV and Radio stations. For those families using the Princeton Bus you can sign up for Alerts about bus service by going to http://www.princeton.k12.oh.us/; to the right of the page find Get Viking Text Alerts, click on this, then click on sign up page. Under special groups check mark Bus Drivers. You will need to enter a last name and a cell number or email address.

SPIRIT WEAR will be delivered on Friday December 17th at SNA. If for some reason there is a delay Mrs. Turner will contact individual families to make arrangements for delivery before Christmas.

The combined OLSH/Sts. Peter and Paul Reconciliation Service will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Church this evening at 7:00 P.M.

Financial Aid Forms have arrived and can be picked up in the school office. We have begun working on the 2011 school budget and the Board will make a decision about tuition at the January meeting. If you will be requesting financial aid it is important to the forms filled out as early as possible because there is only a limited amount of money available from each of the three parishes for this. Financial Aid decisions are made by the Pastors.

WE ARE IN DESPARATE need of workers for the XU game this Saturday December 18th. If you could PLEASE help that would be wonderful. Workers are needed at 5:45 P.M. We will have a pennies for peace collection at Mass on Friday.

The Christmas break begins at 2:30 P.M. this Friday December 17th. Classes resume on Monday January 3rd.

Dear St. Nicholas Academy Community,

There is much excitement in the air as we prepare for our celebration of Christmas and Jesus is once again born in our lives. Thank you for your wonderful support of our school and your presence here. Together we build the body of Christ for our community.

Students and teachers have worked very hard on our Christmas show, “Christmas Snapshots”.
A hard copy letter about this is being sent home with students today outlining times, dress etc. Please read the letter and return the bottom signed so that we know you got it. I know you will enjoy the show!

Also coming home today is a very short survey about Catholic Social Teaching. We ask that you fill it out and return to school. We will use this information as we continue to formulate our Catholic identity goal for the OCSAA. THANKS.

Friday is a food collection day for those families who have pledged to assist the local food banks in Deer Park, Norwood and Reading. Please send in your donation by Friday and we will make sure food is delivered to the various agencies early next week.

We are need of concession volunteers again for the Xavier game on Saturday December 18th. Volunteers need to be16 years of age and must be able to prove it. If you could help us, or know of others who could, PLEASE contact Paul DiMario at paul@peerlessprinting.com or 631-8353. Paul, Carol Dunham and I will make sure everything is set up so workers will not have to be at Xavier until 5:45 P.M. This really does help our school finances a great deal!

There is a flyer attached today about a fund raiser in honor of Jim Siegel on New Years Eve. For the first 3 years of SNA Jim would visit classrooms on December 6th as St. Nicholas. He has been fighting cancer for the past several months and we continue to keep Jim in our prayers.

We will also raffle a beautiful quilt made by Mrs. Taylor and in SNA colors during Catholic School Week. Tickets and a picture are included today.

A wrap up of the Santa Shop is also included. Have a good rest of the week.

To all of our parents, parishioners, teachers, and friends: We couldn’t have done it without your donations, time, energy and enthusiasm.
Because of you, we made $3500 for our PTO. This money goes directly back to our students, teachers and school.
A special thanks to the Holy Trinity Men’s Club, the Norwood Business Women and the Wilmink’s for their generous donations for our student raffle.
We continue to need your help. Our inventory was almost completely depleted this year. Please keep us in mind during the “after Christmas sales” and buy 10-12 items for next year. We are happy to store it at school.
Finally, we will be sending out a brief on-line survey after the first of the year to ask you for your thoughts, comments and ideas about the Santa Workshop. We are always looking to improve it and would love to get feedback.
